On March 9th, 5 Westside students, highly interested in pursuing a career in fashion design or interior design, attended the Career Day Houston 2010 hosted by the Fashion Group International. The students were able to attend small group sessions, led by industry professionals, on topics such as how to merchandise and market items, how to run a retail store, how to start your own internet business and how the fashion industry and media are related and work together. The students were able to network and gain valuable industry knowledge. The main speaker for the event was Gayle Bentley, a successful Houston designer, who was featured on the TV show, The Shark Tank. She gave an inspirational speech to the students about working hard to pursue their career goals. At the end of the event, a fashion show was held to give high school and college students the opportunity to show off some of their work. Amanda Hall, a current junior, was able to show one of her designs. She received 4th place in the high school division. The students had a great time and some are already looking forward to designing their own outfits to show on the runway next year!
